We had a great time at our small business field trip to Elliott's Bakery. This local business if right around the corner from our school! We learned a lot about how a small business is run, we were able to take a tour of the whole bakery, and we decorated our own cookies to take home. Thank you to Elliott's Bakery for having us! We enjoyed ourselves. In Science class, we have been learning about the solar system. After learning about the inner planets and outer planets, we discussed the distances between the Sun and each planet. Because those distances are so large, we calculated them by using scientific notation and then "shrunk" the distances down by using math to calculate scale distances.
Everyone did a great job with their projects and presentations. Today was our Social Studies Trade Fair! Each student brought in between 5 and 20 of the same type of item that they made themselves. After browsing everyone's items, we all were able to trade with each other, so students went home with a variety of different things.
Below are just some examples of items that students made to trade with classmates: small baskets, shower/bath bombs, ornaments, white boards, paintings, bracelets, and keychains. Last week, Mrs. Treusch entered and won a contest to get a class set of real pumpkins for free!
We are using these little pumpkins to make them into scientific models of the eight planets in our solar system. Students had to come up with a rough draft of their design on a piece of paper and then make their vision come to life with their pumpkins and paint. We can't wait to show you the end results! Students will get to take their planet pumpkin home on Friday. Thanks to J. Webb Farm in Newport for the pumpkins! As middle schoolers, we get to go off campus for some of our holiday parties! For our Halloween Party, we will be going to Game On in Taylor. Please make sure that you fill out the two permission slips that were sent home today with your student; one is on purple paper and the other is a waiver on white paper. Have your student bring both papers back to Mrs. Treusch by Monday so we can have an accurate count of who is attending. Thank you! Below is a file for the two permission slips, in case your student misplaced them. Mrs. Treusch also has extras in her classroom for your student to take if they need another copy.
In Science class, we have been discussing science experiments and the scientific method, including observing and inferring. Because students sometimes confuse the term "infer" and the term "observe", we did a lab to discuss the difference between them.
Students brought in empty shoeboxes (or boxes with a similar size and shape). While students were at Gym class, Mrs. Treusch placed one item in each box, at random. Students had to lift the boxes, tip them, roll them, and shake them. They wrote what they observed with their senses. Then they wrote their top three inferences about what they thought was in their box. When we all opened the boxes, it was fun to see if we were right about our inferences. Some of the items ended up being post-it notes, crayons, white-out tape, bandaids, and unopened tissue boxes. Each item definitely felt different and sounded different than the others! The 6th graders all had a wonderful first day of school! I can't wait to see everyone again tomorrow! The following are important printouts for the incoming 6th graders and their adults. The following documents include: 1. Behavior Management Plan and Chromebook Letters (3 pages). Please go over these and sign them. Then bring them back to Mrs. Treusch. These are needed before students can use Chromebooks in class. 2. Welcome Back Letter (1 page). This has information about Mrs. Treusch, some of the things we will be learning this year, the textbooks an workbooks we will be using in 6th grade, our specials schedule, and more. 3. Frequently Asked Questions for 6th Graders (2 pages). This document will answer questions about specials, Chromebooks, snack time and water bottles, lockers, and more. If you think Mrs. Treusch missed anything or if you have questions, feel free to email her or ask at Orientation Night. See everyone tonight!
