We had our first meeting with our buddies! We helped them do a rocket ship craft that had them practicing writing their names, and we also were able to color in a picture of the solar system and read books with them! If you don’t see a picture of your buddy, it might be because their parents don’t want their pictures on public websites. But that’s OK! Mrs. Treusch has the pictures on her phone, so she can print them out to share with our buddies if we want! For some reason, Spelling City skips over Lesson 5 words, so we are actually now on Lesson 6 words. See the list below: Happy Constitution Day 2019! Today we learned more about the IS Constitution by doing an escape room activity. Students were split into groups and had to read information about our Constitution and decode messages to answer questions about history. So fun!
Mrs. Treusch is having a great time at her Chromebook Professional Development Meeting! She is learning a lot about different apps and extensions for Chromebooks as well as how to incorporate them into fun projects and lessons for us this year! Mrs. Treusch also learned about shortcuts on the Chromebook keyboard, which will help save us time. Do you like Mrs. Treusch's Bitmoji? This would be a fun way to talk about emotional responses to a story we read together in class!
Here is the list of spelling words for Lesson 4. We will begin working on these words on Monday, September 16th. The test will be on Friday, September 20th. Today, the 6th graders running for Student Council presented their speeches. All 7 of these students did a fabulous job; I was very impressed! Student Council elections will be tomorrow (Friday, September 13th). Best of luck to everyone!
Today in Social Studies class, we read about the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Students learned more about the World Trade Center towers; the Pentagon; Flight 93 that landed in Shanksville, PA; the September 11 Memorial in New York City (pictured above); and more. We even took a virtual tour of the memorial (click here to view). We talked about the events leading up to the attacks, the terrorist organization behind the attacks, the events that unfolded that morning, the aftermath, and how we honor the people who lost their lives that day. Many of the students had questions about why this tragedy happened and what would motivate someone to do something so horrific. I explained that we need to keep an open mind and have an open heart towards everyone, especially people who may look different than us or come from different places than we do. Hate causes bad things to happen (like these attacks), and we can't let hate enter our hearts. I think this quote from Sandy Dahl, wife of Flight 93 pilot Jason Dahl, sums it up perfectly.
