Many of the students had questions about why this tragedy happened and what would motivate someone to do something so horrific. I explained that we need to keep an open mind and have an open heart towards everyone, especially people who may look different than us or come from different places than we do. Hate causes bad things to happen (like these attacks), and we can't let hate enter our hearts.
Today in Social Studies class, we read about the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Students learned more about the World Trade Center towers; the Pentagon; Flight 93 that landed in Shanksville, PA; the September 11 Memorial in New York City (pictured above); and more. We even took a virtual tour of the memorial (click here to view). We talked about the events leading up to the attacks, the terrorist organization behind the attacks, the events that unfolded that morning, the aftermath, and how we honor the people who lost their lives that day.
